OUR STORY

Anglican Provinces in Africa have witnessed the election of the first crop of six Anglican women bishops in the entire continent. This presents a great opportunity as the position of the bishop is that of influence, authority and power. On 11th January 2024, the six African Anglican female bishops; Bishop Filemona Teta of Angola; Bishop Vicentia Kgabe of Lesotho; Bishop Dalcy Dlamini of Eswatini; Bishop Elizabeth Awut of South Sudan; Bishop Rose Okeno of Butere, Kenya; and Bishop Emily Onyango of Bondo, Kenya - collectively known as the “Africa Six’ gathered at St Paul’s University in Nairobi, Kenya to share their ideas and inspirations about “Christian Leadership for the 21st Century.”

They acknowledged:

WE ARE CAWLRA

A Centre established by the six African Anglican Women Bishops with the aim of transforming Africa and beyond.

VISION

A Continent where Africa’s faith leaders are transformed for greater impact.

MISSION

Train, develop, equip, and inspire Africa’s faith leaders as gatekeepers for society.

CORE VALUES

Justice, Engagement, Reasoning, Scripture, Collaboration, Integrity (JERSCI)

Judges 4:9 (NIV)

Certainly I will go with you, ” said Deborah. “But because of the course you are taking, the honor will not be yours, for the Lord will deliver Sisera into the hands of a woman. ” So Deborah went with Barak to Kedesh.

Why CLAWRA

  • OUR NICHE

As CAWLRA, we will engage with Anglican Churches across Africa to support the Church in its mission and in developing leadership that advances its vision.

  • GENDER JUSTICE

The issue of safety and protection of women business enterprises is key, especially those working in the informal economy where there are numerous stories of killings, harassment and rape of female dealers that has resulted into stress and constant fear. Unequal distribution of resources in Africa leads to unsustainable development. Marginalization of women in the development process affects livelihoods in Africa particularly because women are the ones who bear the brunt of family care and sustainability.

A ROBUST LEADERSHIP PROGRAM FOR WOMEN LEADERS

To facilitate practical leadership development focusing on women but also extended to all faith leaders.

MENTORSHIP & COACHING SUPPORT

To enable mentorship of young women and women clergy for leadership in the Anglican Church and beyond.

GENDER JUSTICE

To equip faith leaders with relevant advocacy tools, conscientization and creation care awareness and how all these affect gender justices from a faith perspective

EVIDENCE-BASED RESEARCH

To offer a research platform on emerging issues and their nexus to climate-change, poverty, justice, conflict transformation, peace building, and food security.

OUR VALUE BASE

Women Leaders in Africa face major challenges today. Given the societal structure they continue to be undermined by men with their voices remaining either silent or mute. Their talents remain hidden and grossly underutilized. Other challenges include gender based - violence, limited access to economic opportunities and political participation, and inadequate access to education and healthcare.

  • Ministry of Caring

  • Focus on Integrity

  • Commitment to Justice

  • Stewardship of Resources

  • Our Focus on Scripture, Reasoning & Tradition
