Empowering Anglican African Women: Leading with Faith, Resilience, and Impact

Target Audience: Ordained and lay Anglican women across Africa, called to leadership within the church and wider community.

Overall Goal: To equip Anglican African women with practical leadership skills, foster a strong network of support, and empower them to confidently lead, advocate, and effect positive change within their contexts, grounded in their faith.

Key Objectives: Participants will be able to:

  • Discern and develop their unique leadership gifts: Understand their strengths and callings within both ecclesiastical and secular spheres.
  • Navigate leadership challenges: Address common barriers faced by women in leadership in Africa, including cultural norms, gender bias, and balancing family/ministry responsibilities.
  • Enhance practical leadership competencies: Develop skills in communication, strategic thinking, conflict resolution, project management, and team building.
  • Cultivate spiritual and emotional resilience: Prioritize self-care, overcome imposter syndrome, and maintain well-being amidst demanding roles.
  • Build strong networks and mentorship relationships: Connect with fellow Anglican women leaders for mutual support, shared learning, and collaboration.
  • Champion gender justice and advocacy: Understand how to advocate for equitable spaces for women within the church and wider society.
  • Lead with integrity and authenticity: Ground their leadership in Christian values and a deep sense of self-awareness.

Core Themes/Modules:

  1. Spiritual Formation and Growth
    • To equip participants to deepen their personal relationship with God, enhance their spiritual resilience, and effectively integrate their faith into their leadership roles and daily lives, contributing to the holistic flourishing of their communities and the wider Anglican Communion.
  2. Finance for non-Finance Managers
    • To empower African Anglican women clergy and lay leaders with the financial knowledge, skills, and confidence to effectively manage church resources, personal finances, and contribute to sustainable ministry and community development.
  3. Effective use of social media:
    • To equip African Anglican women clergy and lay leaders with the knowledge, skills, and ethical understanding to leverage social media effectively for ministry, communication, community building, and personal growth, while ensuring online safety and maintaining professional integrity.
  4. Leadership, Politics and Power:
    • To equip African Anglican women clergy and lay leaders with a critical understanding of leadership theories, the dynamics of politics within religious and societal structures, and the ethical exercise of power, enabling them to lead effectively, advocate for justice, and navigate complex environments for the flourishing of the church and community.
  5. Administration and Management:
    • To equip African Anglican women clergy and lay leaders with practical administrative and management skills, enabling them to efficiently run church operations, manage resources, and effectively support ministry, fostering organizational health and sustainability.
  6. Building and Transforming Lives: Active Nonviolence and Peacebuilding
    • To empower African Anglican women clergy and lay leaders with a foundational understanding of active nonviolence and peacebuilding principles, equipping them with practical skills to transform conflicts, promote reconciliation, and foster sustainable peace within their churches, communities, and nations.
  7. Work & Life Balance
    • To equip African Anglican women clergy and lay leaders with practical strategies and mindsets to navigate the complex demands of ministry, family, community, and personal well-being, fostering sustainable engagement, preventing burnout, and promoting holistic flourishing.
  8. Theology of Work
    • To explore and articulate a robust theological understanding of work, empowering African Anglican women clergy and lay leaders to integrate their faith with all aspects of their professional, ministerial, and domestic labors, recognizing the dignity of every calling and fostering a holistic Christian witness.
  9. Safe Church
    • To equip African Anglican women clergy and lay leaders with the knowledge, skills, and ethical frameworks to create and maintain safe church environments for all, particularly children, vulnerable adults, and those in positions of trust, by understanding safeguarding principles, identifying risks, and implementing preventative and responsive measures.

Methodology:

  • Interactive Online Sessions: Live Zoom meetings with facilitated discussions, breakout rooms, and Q&A.
  • Case Studies and Practical Scenarios: Applying leadership principles to real-world situations relevant to African Anglican women.
  • Mentorship/Peer Coaching: Opportunities for participants to connect in smaller groups for ongoing support.

Expected Outcomes:

  • Increased confidence and competence among Anglican African women in leadership roles.
  • A stronger, more connected community of women leaders within the Anglican Communion in Africa.
  • Enhanced capacity for women to contribute meaningfully to church growth, community development, and social justice.
  • Greater visibility and influence of Anglican African women in leadership at all levels.
